“4600 Nocturnes”: Ukrainian Photography in Vienna
From 24 to 27 September 2026, the art space Das LOT at Brotfabrik Wien hosted the group exhibition “4600 Nocturnes. UKRAINIAN PHOTO DAYS.” Presented as part of the Austrian cultural festival Favorite Fall, the exhibition brought contemporary Ukrainian black-and-white photography to audiences in Vienna.
The exhibition featured more than 50 photographs by 35 Ukrainian photographers from different regions of Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora. Through individual perspectives and personal stories, the works explored themes of memory, identity, loss, resilience and everyday life.
At the heart of the project was photography not only as an artistic medium, but also as a way to preserve personal experiences and transform them into testimony to history. At a time when Ukraine continues to live through war, such visual testimonies allow international audiences to encounter Ukrainian experiences through the perspectives of Ukrainian artists themselves.
The opening was accompanied by a performance by photographic artist Alina Araslanova, while opera singers Olena Vyshnevska and Vladyslav Panfilenko contributed to the musical programme. An Artist Talk with Ukrainian photographers also provided an opportunity for direct exchange between the participating artists and an international audience.
The exhibition was organised by Art Contact Ukraine in cooperation with Kyivphotos-Hall 2012, Das LOT and Favorite Fall.
The Austrian Cooperation Office Lviv supported the project through promotional and communication activities. For us, it is particularly important to strengthen the visibility of contemporary Ukrainian art in Austria and to support initiatives that create opportunities for direct exchange between Ukrainian artists and international audiences.
“4600 Nocturnes” demonstrated the power of photography as an art form, a document and a space of memory — preserving Ukrainian experiences and making them visible far beyond Ukraine.
