The two-day improvisation workshop will be led by Florian С. Reitner.

The workshop offers a practical introduction to the techniques of free improvisation in silent film music with an emphasis on historical, non-narrative short films from Lviv and the region from the Urban Media Archive collection.

The goal of the workshop is to to develop the creative confidence of musicians through the study of basic and advanced concepts of improvisation. Through the analysis of the dramaturgy of historical non-narrative films, participants can try out different approaches and techniques of improvisation in practice.

The workshop is open to:

  • Students of all levels of music education, regardless of instrument, and student vocalists, as well as keyboardists of any age, who want to gain practical experience in the field of musical improvisation for film.
  • Keyboard players (organists, pianists) will be able to receive more practical advice, but improvisation will be considered as a free and creative process with wide opportunities for all participants, regardless of instrument or specialization.
  • Students and experts interested in cultural heritage can join as observers.

Workshop structure:

  • Day 1: Presentation and introduction to improvisation techniques for film music, analysis of selected films and practical improvisation sessions.
  • Day 2: In-depth practical improvisation classes, historical contextualization and discussion of regional identity through music.
  • Final concert: The workshop will conclude with a public concert, where participants will present their musical interpretations of the short films – on keyboards, voice, instruments or in small groups – reflecting on the cultural and historical themes explored during the workshop.
