On 7–8 October 2026, the Research Lab for Sustainable Built Cultural Heritage at the University for Continuing Education Krems (UWK) will host the Austrian-Ukrainian workshop “Rebuilding Identity: Architectural Heritage in Reconstruction.”

The workshop will focus on the restoration, preservation and creation of architectural and cultural identity in the context of post-war reconstruction. Participants will discuss the current challenges faced by Ukraine and explore practical approaches by connecting Ukrainian experiences with lessons learned from reconstruction processes in other countries.

The programme will present a range of case studies, from the ongoing reconstruction of the Italian town of Accumoli following the earthquake to local rebuilding and renewal initiatives implemented over the past fifty years.

Special attention will also be given to Austrian concepts and policy instruments that contribute to the sustainable preservation and strengthening of built cultural heritage and local identity.
