vernissage of the exhibition

On 30 September 2026, the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin will host the opening of “Design in Wartime,” a poster exhibition exploring how architecture and design can respond to war, destruction and uncertainty.

The exhibition will feature 19 projects by Ukrainian and Austrian architecture and design students from Lviv Polytechnic National University and TU Wien.

How can architecture provide protection during wartime? How can urban spaces strengthen communities and solidarity? And how can cities adapt their infrastructure to extraordinary challenges?
The projects explore these questions through innovative design concepts, ranging from temporary shelters to the reimagining of urban infrastructure. At their heart are the ideas of protection, community, resilience and hope.

The exhibition was developed within the framework of 30 years of Austrian-Ukrainian university cooperation between TU Wien and Lviv Polytechnic.
This long-standing academic partnership continues despite Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, providing opportunities for students and academics to exchange knowledge, develop creative solutions and explore the social responsibilities of architecture and design.

We are pleased that the Austrian Cooperation Office Lviv and Ukraine Office Austria at the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs support this cooperation, contributing to the continued development of Austrian-Ukrainian academic relations.

The exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Ukrainian Institute in Germany and is accompanied by a bilingual Ukrainian-English catalogue.
Idea, concept and curatorship: Prof. Dr. Bohdan Tscherkes and Prof. Viktor Shtets.

The exhibition runs until 17 November 2026.
Free admission. The gallery will be closed on 12 and 26 October.
