Franz Werfel Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded to postgraduate students, PhDs, scholars from all over the world (except Austria) for research at Austrian institutions in the fields of: humanities, linguistics and literary studies.

 

Duration of the scholarship: 4-9 months.

If the scholarship is successfully completed, its term can be extended up to 18 months (total duration) if the required request is submitted.

The monthly stipend is € 2,500. Fellows are exempt from tuition fees. Fellows from non-European developing countries receive an additional payment of travel costs of max. € 1200.

 

Accident insurance, health insurance and accommodation are paid independently by the scholarship holder:

  • The Austrian Academic Exchange Service (OeAD-GmbH) offers accommodation (room in a hostel or apartment) with a payment of € 330-800 per month. For the accommodation – € 24 administrative fee;
  • OeAD-GmbH can purchase a health and accident insurance policy for the fellow. On average, health insurance costs € 55-200 per month.

 

Requirements for applicants:

Applicants with above-average qualifications, preferably with teaching experience and university employment, who are mainly interested in Austrian literature, can apply.

These are postdoctoral students and PhD students from higher education institutions that do not have a habilitation instrument.

When assessing the suitability of candidates for the Werfel Fellowship program, their previous teaching and publication experience is also taken into account. Individuals who are unsure whether they are sufficiently qualified are advised to apply for the Ernst Mach Fellowship at the same time. This does not exclude the possibility of applying for the Werfel Fellowship at a later date.

Necessary documents:

  • Application form, filled in on-line, to which should be attached:
  • two letters of recommendation from the home university of the applicant on the university letterhead with date, stamp and signature of the teacher writing the recommendation. The letter must be no older than 6 months;
  • consent to research from a teacher at a host Austrian institution (completed and signed “Betreuungszusage” consent form);
  • a complete list of publications;
  • list of topics of delivered lectures;
  • scan copy of the first page of the passport;
  • scan copy of the diploma of higher education, or of a scientific degree and qualification.
