From 24 to 27 September 2026, Das LOT at Brotfabrik Wien will host “4600 Nocturnes. UKRAINIAN PHOTO DAYS”, a collective exhibition of Ukrainian black-and-white photography presented as part of Favorite Fall, an annual Austrian cultural festival that transforms Brotfabrik Wien into a vibrant meeting point for contemporary art and international cultural dialogue.

The exhibition’s title carries a particular symbolic meaning: it opens on the 4,600th day of Russia’s war against Ukraine. This specific historical dimension is brought together with the idea of the nocturne — a musical and artistic genre traditionally associated with the night as a space of silence, contemplation, memory and inner experience.

 The exhibition brings together 50 works by 34 Ukrainian photographers from different parts of Ukraine and the diaspora. Their individual artistic practices, visual languages and personal stories form a polyphonic visual chronicle of contemporary Ukrainian experience — shaped by war and memory, loss and resilience, but also by life continuing despite it all.

The official opening will take place on 24 September at 7:00 pm. The evening will begin with welcoming remarks by Rainhard Kloucek, President of Paneuropa Bewegung Österreich. The programme will also feature a performance by fine art photographer Alina Araslanova, special musical appearances by Olena Vyshnevska, opera singer from the Odesa Philharmonic, and opera singer Vladyslav Panfilenko, as well as an artist talk with participating Ukrainian photographers.

For Ukraine Office Austria and the Austrian Cooperation Office in Lviv, supporting the presence of contemporary Ukrainian culture in Austria and creating opportunities for direct dialogue between Ukrainian artists and international audiences is particularly important. In this context, photography becomes more than an artistic medium: it is also a way of documenting Ukrainian experiences, preserving memory and enabling Ukraine to be seen through the perspectives and voices of Ukrainian artists themselves.

The exhibition is curated by Yana Gryniv and Valery Leshchynsky, with Nadiia Yanieva responsible for project management in Vienna. The project is organised by the curatorial platform Art Contact Ukraine in partnership with Kyivphotos-Hall 2012, Das LOT / ECHOLOT and Favorite Fall.
