we invite you to discover the double bass in a new way
Often seen in the background of the orchestra, the double bass is frequently underestimated. Yet as a solo instrument, it reveals remarkable depth, warmth and expressive power.
On 6 May 2026 at 19:00, the Mirror Hall of the Lviv National Opera will host a special concert placing the double bass centre stage — a rare and unique opportunity.
The programme brings together baroque intimacy, classical clarity and romantic virtuosity, featuring works by:
- G. Frescobaldi — Canzone no. 5
- D. Dragonetti — Waltz no. 11
- F. Schubert — Sonata “Arpeggione”
- R. Schumann — Fantasiestücke
- G. Bottesini — Grande Allegro alla Mendelssohn
A highlight of the evening is a composition by Giovanni Bottesini, often called the “Paganini of the double bass”, showcasing the instrument’s virtuosity and lyrical beauty.
The performers are Vienna-based double bassist Wolfgang Harrer, whose career spans four continents, and Lviv pianist Myroslav Dragan, Honoured Artist of Ukraine.
This concert offers a chance to rediscover the double bass as a “familiar stranger” — a powerful musical voice capable of profound storytelling.
