As part of Berlin Design Week, the exhibition Design in Wartime, featuring nineteen projects by Ukrainian and Austrian students in architecture, communication design, and social design, will be presented.
Berlin Design Week is one of Europe’s leading platforms for contemporary design, bringing together architects, designers, artists, and researchers to discuss social transformation, urban futures, and sustainable innovation. In 2026, the festival particularly focuses on resilience, responsibility, and the role of design in times of crisis.
The exhibition explores how architecture and design can respond to war, destruction, and uncertainty. The presented projects reflect new spatial strategies of protection, survival, and solidarity — from temporary shelters to reimagined urban infrastructures and public spaces.
At the same time, the projects are not only responses to present challenges but also visions for the future, reconstruction, and socially responsible urban development.
The exhibition is the result of more than thirty years of cooperation between TU Wien and Lviv Polytechnic University and was realized with the support of the Austrian Cooperation Office Lviv and Ukraine Office Austria at the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue (Ukrainian–English).
Curated by Prof. Dr. Bohdan Tscherkes and Prof. Viktor Shtets.
