a collaboration between Ukrainian and Austrian students

The exhibition “Design in Wartime” presents nineteen works by Ukrainian and Austrian design and architecture students who address the spatial, social, and cultural challenges of life in war. The exhibition focuses on how architecture and design can respond to threat, destruction, and insecurity, and what forms of protection, community, and hope they can create in the city.

The projects on display reflect the search for new spatial strategies for survival and cohesion—from temporary shelters to the reinterpretation of urban infrastructure.

As part of the thirty-year cooperation between the Vienna University of Technology and the Lviv Polytechnic, this exhibition is intended as a symbol of solidarity, professional dialogue, and a shared belief in the social responsibility of architecture and design—especially in times of war.

The exhibition is the result of a long-standing and fruitful Austrian-Ukrainian university partnership, supported by the OeAD Cooperation Office Lviv and the Ukraine Office Austria at the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Nineteen portrait-format, self-explanatory posters of student projects are available electronically and can be printed, mounted, or displayed in any size. A bilingual catalog (Ukrainian-English) accompanies the exhibition.

The exhibition is scheduled to be shown in Austria in 2026 and will be offered to Austrian diplomatic missions and Austrian cultural forums, as well as shown abroad.
