We warmly invite you to a keynote lecture in Vienna by renowned historian Serhy Yekelchyk, Professor of History and Slavic Studies at the University of Victoria, Canada.

His lecture, “War and Revolution as Shortcuts to Nationalism: The Many Nations of the Ukrainian Lands, 1914–1921,” will explore the complex processes of national identity formation across the Ukrainian lands during a period profoundly shaped by war and revolutionary transformation.

The lecture is part of the international conference “Nationalities and National Diversity in Revolutionary Ukraine, 1917–1921.”

Born and educated in Ukraine, Serhy Yekelchyk received his PhD from the University of Alberta. He is the author of eight books on modern Ukrainian history and Russo-Ukrainian relations and is Professor of History and Slavic Studies at the University of Victoria. From 2015 to 2026, he served as President of the Canadian Association for Ukrainian Studies.

The event forms part of a broader academic cooperation aimed at advancing a nuanced understanding of Ukrainian history and its national diversity. We are pleased that Ukraine Office Austria supports initiatives that foster international scholarly exchange and strengthen the presence of Ukrainian studies within Austrian and international academia.
