we invite you to an exquisite anthology of European Baroque
We invite you to a concert by the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra presenting a refined anthology of European Baroque — where German structural clarity meets Italian expressiveness and French court elegance.
The first part will feature Suite No. 1 for orchestra in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach. This work, sustained in the atmosphere of Jean-Baptiste Lully’s dance music, which sounded at the court of the “Sun King” Louis XIV, is an example of a perfect combination of French grace and German contrapuntal mastery.
The evening will continue with the Concerto grosso “La Follia” by Francesco Geminiani, whose unpredictable style and turbulent emotionality earned him the nickname “il furibondo” (the furious). The work is based on one of the oldest European melodies of Portuguese origin – “Folia”, which means “madness”. Embodying this spirit, Geminiani’s music is full of sharp contrasts, “crunchy” chords and bold ornaments, which makes each of its performances unique and unforgettable.
The second part of the concert will open with the Concerto grosso, op. 3/2 by George Frideric Handel, which impresses with its rich texture and expressive role of woodwinds. After the majestic Vivace, the audience will plunge into the deeply expressive Largo, where the solo oboe and two cellos create an unsettling, almost operatic atmosphere, and the final minuets return to the bright world of dance.
The program will culminate in one of the most famous of Bach’s scores, the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major. Its second movement, the famous “Aria”, often called the “Aria on the G string”, is a true apotheosis of pure spiritual beauty. This short movement captivates with its extremely lyrical melody, quiet counterpoint and deeply poetic sense of inner contemplation, giving the listeners moments of supreme harmony.
