polyphony in the Ukrainian tradition
We invite you to a presentation of the Polyphony Project — a large-scale digital archive of traditional Ukrainian multipart singing.
The project brings together years of fieldwork across Ukrainian villages, documenting vocal and instrumental practices, collecting audiovisual materials, and conducting scholarly analysis. It contributes significantly to preserving and promoting Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage internationally.
The project leader Miklós Both — composer, musician, and ethnographer — will present the project and share insights into field research, archiving processes, and selected materials.
Following this, Ukrainian musicologist Iryna Fedun will discuss types of vocal and instrumental polyphony in Ukrainian traditions, as well as questions of musical practice, research, and cultural mediation.
Programme:
- 17:00–17:30 — Welcome remarks
- 17:30–18:30 — Lecture & discussion with Miklós Both
- 18:30–18:45 — Break
- 18:45–19:45 — Lecture & discussion with Iryna Fedun
