The reconstruction of Austria after the Second World War - a model for Ukraine?

The symposium is devoted to the key events of the Austrian reconstruction, which is considered exemplary and successful. The destruction in Ukraine as a result of the war, which has already lasted more than 30 months, is reminiscent of the situation in Austria in 1945, when dozens of settlements, cities, many cultural heritage sites and important infrastructure were destroyed and the country had to be redefined.

Both European countries were and are in a situation where they had to rebuild their cities and villages and revive their economy and social development in a peaceful way. How did this process go in Austria and what lessons can be learned from the subsequent development? What is comparable, what were the special features? What values and ideas can be incorporated into the reconstruction of Ukraine?

Many of the topics (finance, economy, law, technology, partnerships, etc.) are already being discussed in Austria and other countries and are therefore not given priority here. The focus of this symposium is on people’s built environment, their homeland.

The aim is to identify and define approaches for a targeted follow-up.

The exchange of experiences will take place partly in German and partly in Ukrainian, and translation is planned.

The symposium program can be found here.
