Advancing prosthetics education through international cooperation
International academic cooperation continues to play a key role in strengthening rehabilitation systems in Ukraine. With the growing demand for modern prosthetics and high-quality rehabilitation services, the training of skilled professionals — including prosthetists, orthopaedic technicians and rehabilitation specialists — is becoming increasingly important.
A key component of this effort is the development of training laboratories at medical universities in Lviv and Ternopil, implemented in close cooperation with Austrian partners. As part of the initiative “Help for self-help with limb prosthetics”, launched in 2024, these labs are being equipped with modern technologies, including prosthetic components donated from Austria and South Tyrol, enabling hands-on learning.
On 30 March 2026, Prof. Hubert Egger (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria), an expert in limb prosthetics, visited Ternopil National Medical University. During his visit, he presented newly acquired equipment and engaged with students and faculty on its practical application in training.
The following day, Prof. Egger continued his visit in Lviv at Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, where he delivered a lecture emphasizing the importance of integrating theory and practice in education.
As highlighted during the visit, Ukrainian specialists already demonstrate strong commitment and expertise. At the same time, there remains a significant need for additional qualified professionals to meet the growing demand in prosthetic care and rehabilitation.
The cooperation will continue in September 2026 with a new training cycle, combining in-person visits, online lectures and practical sessions, concluding with certification.
The initiative is supported by the Austrian Cooperation Office in Lviv, the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the Austrian Embassy in Ukraine, the Austrian Ministry of Health, as well as donors from Austria and South Tyrol.
Together, these efforts contribute to building a new generation of professionals and improving access to modern rehabilitation services in Ukraine.
