In 2016, the OeAD Cooperation Office in Lviv supported Serhiy Czoliy in publishing the monograph “Mobilization on the Periphery” in Ukrainian. The book has now also been published in English. The publication is the result of extensive research and is funded by the University of Vienna and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
The publication is now available in English translation: both electronically and in print.
This volume is dedicated to the modernization of the army personnel system and its impact on Austro-Hungarian society. The primary methodology is based on a comparative analysis of military modernization at the imperial level, with a specific case study of a peripheral province of the empire—Austria-Galicia. This analytical model, supported by a solid archival foundation, offers a nuanced perspective on modernity. It examines the lives of ordinary people in Central Europe and examines the key impacts of military service on their everyday lives. The book aims to highlight both the positive and negative aspects of the introduction of universal conscription for the majority of the Reich’s population.
