Design in Wartime: Architecture and Design Responding to War
As part of Berlin Design Week 2026, the exhibition “Design in Wartime” has opened, presenting 19 projects by Ukrainian and Austrian students in architecture, communication design, and social design.
The exhibition explores how architecture and design can respond to war, destruction, and uncertainty. The showcased projects propose new spatial strategies for protection, survival, and social cohesion — ranging from emergency shelters and spaces for displaced communities to concepts for future reconstruction and urban recovery.
The exhibition is rooted in a long-standing academic partnership between TU Wien and Lviv Polytechnic National University, reflecting more than three decades of cooperation. The projects demonstrate how a new generation of architects and designers is addressing contemporary challenges while envisioning resilient and sustainable futures.
The exhibition was realized with the support of the OeAD Cooperation Office Lviv and Ukraine Office Austria of the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs. A bilingual Ukrainian-English catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
