Study Visit to the Medical University of Graz within Erasmus+

From April 13–17, staff members of the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University participated in an intensive cadaver course on microsurgery, surgical approaches to the head, flap reconstruction, and microvascular anastomosis at the Department of Clinical Anatomy of the Medical University of Graz within the framework of the Erasmus+ international academic mobility programme.

The multidisciplinary team included 13 specialists in oral surgery, maxillofacial surgery, and otorhinolaryngology. Participants represented the clinics of head and neck surgery, traumatology, and reconstructive surgery, including specialists from the newly established reconstructive and plastic surgery department of the University Hospital of LNMU, as well as academic staff from related departments.

The programme combined lectures and hands-on practical training using cadaver specimens. Participants attended lectures on the anatomy of the head, neck, and upper limb, modern surgical approaches in maxillofacial and plastic surgery, and graft harvesting techniques from both local and distant donor sites.

During the practical sessions, participants trained a wide range of surgical procedures and engaged in daily discussions of complex facial tissue reconstruction cases together with leading Austrian specialists in clinical anatomy, plastic surgery, and maxillofacial surgery.

Special attention was also devoted to learning about embalming and preservation techniques for cadaver material, as well as Austria’s legal framework regulating its educational use. All training sessions and professional communication were conducted in English.
