Training visit of Ukrainian surgeons to Graz
From 10 to 15 October 2025, 12 Ukrainian surgical specialists from the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University participated in a scientific and practical training course at the Medical University of Graz (Med Uni Graz) focused on plastic reconstructive surgery of the head and neck.
The multidisciplinary course included a series of lectures and demonstrations on contemporary surgical approaches in general, oral, maxillofacial, orthopedic, and vascular surgery, followed by hands-on practice on anatomical specimens. Participants had the opportunity to refine reconstructive techniques for complex craniofacial tissue repair and to observe live surgical procedures broadcast from the operating room.
The course was organized by the Division of Macroscopic and Clinical Anatomy (Gottfried Schatz Research Center) with the support of the Med Uni Graz International Office and academic teams from the Division of Plastic Surgery and the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The visit was also supported by representatives from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, the Austrian Cooperation Office Lviv / Ukraine Office Austria, and other partners.
As part of the program, participants engaged with preservation methods for anatomical specimens and learned about the legal framework governing the use of body donor tissue for research and training in Styria.
The training visit aims to strengthen professional capacity in reconstructive surgery among Ukrainian specialists, a field of critical importance for treating complex injuries resulting from ongoing military aggression. The skills and expertise gained will be applied in future clinical work and educational programs in Ukraine.
