Ukraine and Austria at the 56th Winter Festival in Brazil

Ukraine and Austria were represented at the 56th Campos do Jordão Winter Festival (Festival de Campos do Jordão) — one of Brazil’s leading classical music festivals.

Ukrainian musician Veronika Nuriieva participated in this year’s educational programme. Altogether, the festival brought together 239 young musicians from 89 cities, 16 Brazilian states and nine countries: Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Peru, Austria and Ukraine. Over the course of one month, the participants worked in four areas: the Opera Academy, conducting, chamber music and the Festival Orchestra. The educational programme comprised 550 activities, including masterclasses, individual lessons, rehearsals and chamber music practice, amounting to 1,585 hours of professional training.

Ukraine’s participation in the project continued in Brasília through a special music programme bringing together Ukrainian and Austrian musicians.

Ukrainian pianist Olena Miso and Austrian cellist Sophie Stocker presented a joint programme at the Brasília School of Music, connecting European musical traditions with Brazilian audiences. The repertoire included works by Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Antonín Dvořák, as well as Ukrainian composers Borys Liatoshynsky and Myroslav Skoryk.

Education was an important component of the project. Piano and cello masterclasses were held for students of the Brasília School of Music. The school also received scores by Ukrainian composers, giving Brazilian students greater access to Ukraine’s classical music repertoire.

Projects of this kind do more than present Ukrainian music internationally. They create opportunities for direct professional dialogue among musicians, teachers and students, foster new international connections and support the long-term inclusion of Ukrainian works in educational and concert programmes abroad.

The programme resulted from a partnership between Fundação Osesp, the Austrian Cultural Forum Kyiv, the Embassy of Ukraine in Brazil, the Ukrainian Institute, the Ukraine Office Austria and the Austrian Embassy in Brasília. It brought together institutions from Ukraine, Austria and Brazil around a shared goal: developing international musical exchange and strengthening the presence of Ukrainian culture in Brazil.
