Ukrainian documentary cinema showcased in Buenos Aires
In April 2026, Buenos Aires hosted the 27th Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (BAFICI), one of Latin America's most prestigious independent film festivals. This year's edition featured more than 300 films from over 50 countries, selected from a record 4,637 submissions, including more than 3,600 international productions.
Among the selected Ukrainian films was “Militantropos”, directed by Simon Mozgovyi, Yelizaveta Smith and Alina Gorlova—a co-production between Ukraine, Austria and France. The documentary was screened three times during the festival, each followed by audience Q&A sessions with director Simon Mozgovyi. The screenings attracted 567 viewers, contributing to the festival’s strong international programme.
In addition to presenting the film, Simon Mozgovyi served as a member of the Vanguardia y Género (Vanguard and Genre) international jury. His participation in jury deliberations, public discussions and media interviews significantly enriched the festival programme while promoting contemporary Ukrainian documentary filmmaking to an international audience. Festival organisers highlighted the valuable contribution of Austrian-Ukrainian cultural cooperation to strengthening international dialogue and professional exchange.
Simon Mozgovyi’s participation at BAFICI was organised by the Ukrainian Institute, with the support of the Embassy of Austria in Buenos Aires and the Embassy of Ukraine in Argentina.
The project demonstrates how international cultural cooperation continues to create opportunities for Ukrainian artists, strengthen European partnerships and bring Ukrainian stories to audiences around the world.
