The Castle (in Ukrainian)
The Castle is Franz Kafka’s last, unfinished, and most mysterious novel (1883–1924), in which all the themes and conflicts that troubled the writer throughout his life are reflected.
At the center of the novel, as in almost all Kafka’s works, are the secretive, incomprehensible, and illogical relations between a person and the world, the system, authority, and other people. The protagonist, finding himself in a foreign environment, tries to come to an understanding with those on whom his fate now depends. However, these efforts require unjustified sacrifices: to give up one’s dignity and sincere feelings. The hero’s story echoes the vicissitudes of the author’s own fate and tragically conveys the loneliness and helplessness of a person in their struggle against cruelty and the absurdity of life.
