The End of the World (in Ukrainian)
Jura Soyfer (1912–1939)—son of a Kharkiv businessman who fled the Bolshevik revolution to Vienna—is one of the most striking figures of Vienna's 1930s “subculture.”
He was called “the Austrian Büchner.” His work continued the traditions of political satire established by Heinrich Heine, Georg Herwegh, Karl Kraus, and Kurt Tucholsky, blending them with the styles of Vienna’s popular theater (Ferdinand Raimund, Johann Nestroy), political cabaret, and dramatic techniques reminiscent of young Bertolt Brecht. Soyfer’s life was tragically cut short at age 26 in the Nazi concentration camp Buchenwald. This book, published to mark the centenary of his birth, contains his most well-known plays, stories, and essays.
