Cities and People (in Ukrainian)
The book Cities and People brings together atmospheric feuilletons, essays, and reports by Joseph Roth that create a panoramic portrait of the early 20th century.
A native of Brody in Galicia, Roth began his journalistic career after returning from World War I, writing urban reports. In the 1920s, he traveled the world—visiting cities such as St. Petersburg, Astrakhan, Tirana, Sarajevo, Marseille, and Nice—discovering new places both for himself and his readers. What reminds one of wartime in postwar Sarajevo? Can the noble era still be recognized nine years after the Bolshevik revolution? What draws people to the “white cities” of southern France? With brilliant literary talent and a light, witty style, the young reporter vividly portrays life in France, Albania, and Russia. In the essay Jews: Roads and Dead Ends, Roth creates a touching and affectionate tribute to the people he knew best from childhood—Eastern European Jews. He also writes brief reports about the cities where Eastern Jews dispersed after the First World War—Vienna, Berlin, Paris, and New York.
