Mobilization on the Periphery (in Ukrainian)

Mobilization on the Periphery (in Ukrainian)

Monograph. This book is devoted to analyzing the broader European process of societal transformation and modernization under the influence of compulsory military service.

The study is based on a comparative analysis of the general state of affairs in Austria-Hungary and specific local cases from the Austrian province of Galicia. This model makes it possible to understand how global processes affected distant and peripheral regions and reveals their true significance for specific territories of modern Europe. An important aspect of this transformation involved the national, social, and religious characteristics of the Habsburg Monarchy, which left a distinct imprint on its universal modernization strategies. Several chapters assess the effectiveness of the then-modern system of military conscription and its direct impact on the empire’s citizens.
