Richard Plaschka Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded to PhDs from all over the world (except Austria) for research at Austrian institutions, for establishing and promoting scientific cooperation in the areas of: humanities: historical sciences, archeology.

 

Duration of the scholarship: 4-18 months.

The monthly stipend is € 2,500.

Fellows are exempt from tuition fees. Fellows from non-EU, EFTA or OECD countries receive an additional payment of € 1200 in travel expenses.

 

Accident insurance, health insurance and accommodation:

  • OeAD student housing will endeavour to arrange accommodation (student dormitory or apartment) for scholarship holders upon request. Monthly costs: currently around €330 to €800 (guideline: depends on the level of comfort required by the scholarship holders). In the 2025/26 academic year, EUR 24 per month is expected to be paid to OeAD student housing as an administrative fee for the placement.
  • For the duration of the stay in Austria, health insurance that is valid in Austria and recognized by the Austrian authorities is required. The OeAD GmbH can help you take out adequate insurance. Monthly costs: As a rule, currently around EUR 55 to EUR 200 (guideline: depends on age, scholarship category and state of health).
  • The costs for accommodation and insurance are to be paid by the scholarship holders.
  • The costs for medical care during stays abroad within the EU are charged by the respective national insurance providers. When staying in EU countries on scholarship, the European Health Insurance Card should be taken along.
  • People who are not citizens of an EU/EEA state and who are planning a stay of more than 6 months: If your accommodation costs in Austria exceed 300 euros per month, you may have to provide the immigration authorities with additional proof of your own funds in order to obtain a residence permit. This amount may vary depending on the individual costs of your health insurance in Austria and any other financial obligations.

Requirements for applicants:

Applicants with above-average qualifications who focus on historical or historiographical topics related to Austria are eligible to apply. These are: postdoctoral researchers and doctoral or PhD students from higher education systems that do not provide for the instrument of habilitation.
When assessing the suitability of applicants for the Richard Plaschka scholarship program, previous teaching and publication activities are also evaluated.

Necessary documents:

  • Application form, filled in on-line: www.scholarships.at, to which should be attached:
  • two letters of recommendation from university professors who defended their doctoral dissertation. Recommendations can be in any form on the letterhead of the university, with the date and signature of the teacher, not earlier than 6 months at the time of application for the scholarship;
  • consent to the research of the lecturer who defended his doctoral dissertation of the host institution (completed and signed the Betreuungszusage consent form),
  • scan of the first page of your passport (photo and name page),
  • scanning of a diploma of higher education, a scientific degree and qualification,
  • a detailed description of the Austrian research project and a bibliography,
  • confirmation of teaching load,
  • confirmation of employment at the university.
