book presentation in Salzburg

On June 2, in Salzburg will host a discussion and book presentation of “Art against Artillery” by Ukrainian journalist and human rights activist Olha Volynska.

The discussion will also feature director and cultural manager Anastasiia Larina and will be moderated by philosopher and journalist Raffael Reithofer.

Four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion and twelve years after the beginning of the war in eastern Ukraine, art has become for many Ukrainians not only a form of expression, but also a space of survival, resistance, and humanity. The event will reflect on the role of culture in wartime and on art as a medium of testimony, memory, and resilience.

“Art against Artillery” (2025) brings together interviews with Ukrainian artists who continue creating under the conditions of war. Through personal stories and reflections, the book explores how art helps process loss, transform trauma, and maintain connections with society and the future.

Olha Volynska is a Ukrainian journalist, human rights activist, and cultural researcher currently based in Graz. Since 2022, her work has focused on war, human rights, artistic practices, and cultural memory. Her book has become an important testimony to the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian cultural scene.

The discussion will be held in English.
