“Sometimes a nation becomes modern. Now it is the Ukrainians,” wrote Joseph Roth in the mid-1920s after returning to his homeland—Lviv (then Lemberg), Brody and the wider region of Galicia, today part of Ukraine.

Almost a century later, Volkstheater Wien and the Maria Zankovetska National Theatre retrace Roth’s journey through Vienna, Brody and Lviv, creating a theatrical production that explores his life, writings and enduring connection to Ukraine.

The result is “Ukrainomania”—a large-scale production featuring the theatre ensemble and orchestra, combining drama, live animation, music and contemporary stage design.

The performance is a co-production of the Maria Zankovetska National Theatre and Volkstheater Wien, in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and peaches&rooster.
