Why is there no nostalgia for EU enlargement?

On May 1st, Sebastian Schäffer (Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM)) gave a lecture at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, addressing a remarkable paradox of contemporary Europe: the lack of nostalgia for EU enlargement.

Although enlargement was a key driver of European transformation after 1989, it has barely become part of a shared European narrative. The lecture explored possible reasons for this – from the technocratic nature of the process to the lack of political narratives.

A particular focus was placed on what this experience means for Ukraine today – especially in the context of European integration and the development of its own narratives.

We thank our partners for this ongoing cooperation.
