German-language novellas by Olha Kobylanska (in German)
Olha Kobylanska (1863–1942) is regarded in Ukrainian literature as one of the key representatives of the fin de siècle modernist movement.
With her literary prose, she introduced new topics, themes, and characters into Ukrainian literature that addressed feminist issues, philosophical worldviews, and psychological depth of representation. From childhood, she was influenced by the German language and culture and began writing early in German. Although she later switched to Ukrainian and wrote her major novels and stories in that language, the German-language part of her work remains sovereign and relevant today. This volume contains stories, sketches, and an essay by Olha Kobylanska, originally published in various German-language periodicals but now almost inaccessible. For the first time since 1901, when her volume Kleinrussische Novellen was published in Germany, these texts are again available in book form. The edition was released to mark the poetess’s 150th birthday.
