A Journalist’s Revue (in Ukrainian)
The book is Schwarz’s reflection on 25 years of his life, closely tied to journalism.
Arnold Schwarz was a Chernivtsi-based journalist and editor-in-chief of the Czernowitzer Allgemeine Zeitung. A Journalist’s Revue was written 90 years ago and first published in 1928. It offers not only insights into the state of journalism in Chernivtsi and Bukovina during the early decades of the 20th century—tracing the emergence and development of a modern press—but also presents a vivid picture of the lives of journalists and reporters. Many of the stories he tells are so fantastic or humorous that they may seem more like fiction than reality. Through the lens of Schwarz’s professional journey, the book also sheds light on the ethical principles of journalists at the time, the growing focus on public-interest topics, the evolution of media–public relations, the first journalistic investigations, and the emergence of independent journalism and its influence on public opinion. “Journalism is my profession, and one of its greatest qualities is writing under the inspiration of the moment. This book is not a literary work—it is the work of a daily journalist who, driven by spontaneous memories, made a quick decision to write it, and acted on it immediately, in the spirit of our craft. This book was dictated to stenographers over four days. The heavy workload of a daily newspaper’s editor-in-chief leaves no time for hesitation or stylistic deliberation. Events pressed forward, and the book had to be completed swiftly. This is not an apology—word of honor. I present myself here simply as a daily journalist.” — Arnold Schwarz
