Karl-Markus Gauß is an Austrian reporter and writer, born in 1954 in Salzburg, where he studied German studies and history and lives till this days. He publishes the journal Literature and Criticism and contributes to several periodicals, including Die Zeit, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), Neue Zürcher Zeitung, and Die Presse.

Karl-Markus Gauß, renowned for his profound writings on small peoples and ethnic minorities in Europe, in this book introduces readers to the Roma communities of Eastern Slovakia, hidden away from the outside world. The author gets to know the Roma and their neighbors, sharing insights into their customs and everyday life, their hardships and joys, the historical background and contemporary realities of the complex coexistence between the “black” and “white” communities just near Ukraine. Ultimately, the book reflects on otherness and the humanity within each of us. The Ukrainian edition is illustrated with photographs by Kurt Kaindl.
