In Other Times (in Ukrainian)
Soma Morgenstern’s memory box is filled with treasures, many of which he shares in this autobiographical work.
His father was the manager of several estates in Podillia. From 1904 to 1912, Soma attended a Polish gymnasium in Ternopil. As such, the book's backdrop is rural Podillia at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, as well as life in early 20th-century Ternopil. These are stories full of love, wisdom, and humor, featuring the author's relatives and fellow villagers—Ukrainians, Jews, and Poles—as central characters. They depict major and minor events of the time: the first peasant strike in one village, the construction of a railway, the first airplane flight over Ternopil, and the arrival of the sensational Buffalo Bill Circus. This book will be a true find not only for historians and local lore enthusiasts but also for a broad readership.
