The Little Vampire (in Ukrainian)
Renate Welsh’s The Little Vampire is a charming tale—kind to children and enlightening for adults.
The vampire theme in contemporary teen literature is as popular as wizardry, but Welsh’s character does not drink blood—he sucks bile from people’s gallbladders. The result? People immediately become kind-hearted. The little vampire is raised on milk by 67-year-old Mrs. Lizzi, who found him in a spider web in the corner of her apartment. She decided to keep him, despite her neighbor’s advice: “Throw it in the trash if you're so soft-hearted. But be quick—the garbage collectors are coming soon. Just don’t toss it in an empty bin. You never know—what if it climbs out?” Mrs. Lizzi’s kindness benefits the entire building—the vampire drains people’s bile, and the neighbors stop snapping at each other. When he moves on to drivers and helps resolve traffic jams, one can’t help but feel a tinge of envy toward those lucky enough to own a pet vampire. A local professor even takes the little vampire for experiments—this unpleasant twist becomes the central plotline of this light-hearted and whimsical book.
