The book “Notes on Colors” (1977)
by the famous Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) is an organized collection of notes that the philosopher wrote in the last years of his life, compiled by Elizabeth Enscom. Here, the problem of color, which had interested Wittgenstein since the time of the Logico-Philosophical Treatise (1918/21), is examined in detail. Wittgenstein polemicizes with Goethe and Runge, discusses colors that cannot be thought, speaks of blindness and color blindness, and finally shows the connection between language play and the use of words to denote color. At first glance, fragmented and chaotic, Wittgenstein’s text, on the one hand, offers a new perspective on the philosophical problem of color, and on the other, continues the tradition. The book will be of interest to philosophers, artists, scientists, designers, and everyone who sees the world in colors.
